Artist Statement
Light is my subject, whether it is a still life, landscape, or portrait. My goal is to paint the visual truth of our world by seeing the beauty in the everyday living and the commonplace things. I follow in the footsteps of the Impressionists, American master colorist Henry Hensche, and my mentor, longtime painter and teacher Sammy Britt. Painting this way is the art of seeing, it is the language of light and color. It is similar to being a musician in that the light is the key and the colors are the notes. You have to hit the color notes accurately to express the light key that you’re painting in. It requires humbling yourself before nature. Let nature teach you, no matter how long you’ve been painting, you cannot assume you know how to paint something because it is a new challenge every time. Allow nature to reveal itself to you by looking for the visual truth of the material in front of you. It is an ongoing discovery, an ever-deepening fascination with learning to see. I want my work to open people’s eyes to the beauty that’s in front of them everyday.
